ScottGu's Blog: Los Angeles Web Camp

A few months ago I blogged about some Web Camp events that Microsoft is sponsoring around the world. These events provide a great way to learn about ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, and Visual Studio 2010. The events are free and the feedback from people attending them has been great. We are working to setup many more web camps around the world in the months ahead.

This Friday (September 10th) we’ll be holding a free web camp in Los Angeles. Phil Haack, Jon Galloway, and James Senior will all be presenting at the event – so it will be really good.

Details on the Los Angeles Web Camp can be found here. We just got additional space so some extra seats are now available. They are filling up fast, though, and will be sold out soon. Learn more and register here if you want to grab them and attend.

 Hope this helps,

 Scott

P.S. In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu

4GuysFromRolla.com Headlines: Displaying Files and Folders in a GridView

The .NET Framework provides a variety of classes in the
System.IO
namespace that simplify working with the file system. Using these classes it's possible to delete files and folders, to create new files, to edit existing files, and more. These classes, combined with ASP.NET's suite of Web controls and databinding syntax, make it quite easy to present information about the files on the web server's file system to visitors to your website. With a bit of markup and code, it's possible to add a simple file browser to a web page that allows users to view the files and folders from a particular directory on the web server. Such file browsers are useful if you let users upload content to the website and need to let them view their uploaded content. If you have a folder that contains user-accessible content like images, PDF files and Word documents, a file browser offers a quick and easy way for users to see what content is available and to view content of interest.

Back in 2003 I wrote an article titled Displaying the Files in a Directory using a DataGrid that showed how to list the files of a particular folder in a DataGrid Web control. This dated article still attracts a decent amount of traffic and questions from readers, so much so that I thought it worthwhile to update the content to use the latest technology, namely ASP.NET 4 and the GridView Web control. I also added some new features. For example, the file browser now lists both files and folders, allowing users to view the files in subfolders. Also, I moved the markup and code into a User Control, which simplifies adding the file browser to an ASP.NET page. This article walks through this new, updated version; the complete, working code is available for download at the end of this article. Read on to learn more!

Over the past week, I've heard a number of people talk about various hackathons, hack days, pitch days, and general all-night coding adventures. I've never attended one of these events and I have to say, hearing about them makes me more than a little bit jealous. I understand that a majority of the fun that people get out of these things is due to the fact that you have so many people together doing the same thing. But, I'm an impatient man and I believe that the next hackathon in my area is ... Read More »

Bugs occur. Once you accept that fact, you can do something about it. There are bugs in every piece of software with even a minimal level of complexity. Various options exist to address these. Manual testing is one, but it is often hard to reproduce, or just isn’t done. Automated testing is also possible, and useful, particularly with regards to test driven development. But even this has problems because poorly written tests require debugging themselves. In short, there is NO silver bullet. There are, however, more tools available.
